Bright spot lights flared into life, big groups of up to eight lights in each glared down at the sand covered arena. The intense heat of the lamps creating a heat haze around the steel coverings. The illumination set the scene quite nicely, or at least Takeshi thought so, it felt very much like a sports stadium, and to say he was excited for what was to come was an understatement. The Highguard private practice arena hadn’t seen any use in a few years, but a little spit shine had brought it back to good as new, the sand covered arena still offered a slippery surface for pilots who had to make sure they made use of their Zoid’s claws to keep a steady footing, and giant carved stones provided some light cover, the stone wall that ringed it was almost twenty metres high to ensure the safety of the small crowd who stood and sat in preparation, they’d paid a premium to be here and see the event. They were also protected by sheets of several feet thick bullet proof and blast proof glass.
Takeshi looked over it all with a smile from his private box, it was a small room that held a communications array to speak to both the crowd and the pilots alternately. Pressing the green button labelled “Crowd” Takeshi spoke into the raised microphone, “Good evening honoured guests and sports fans, Highguard welcomes you to our first spectated training session since the reformation, I hope you all enjoy yourselves and please help yourself to the hor d’ouvres and champagne the servers are bringing around, we thank you all for your patronage. Tonight you will see two of our newest recruits, rookies Aiyana Shuer and Alana Taylor, both were handpicked to join the team from the amateur tournament circuit.” He left his hand fall off the button and switched to the red one labelled “Pilots”.
“Alright rookies, this is your chance to see how you work as a team, and to see how you perform under the watchful eye of the adoring public.” He chuckled to himself as he remembered his first time fighting with a crowd watching on, “You’ll be going up against a pair of AI controlled Zoids, their movements will follow a pre-determined pattern that we’ve adjusted to suit your first attempt, as we gain an idea of where your skill level is the algorithm will increase its effectiveness.” With the flick of a switch a gate at the opposite end of the arena opened and out walked a tall, proud Lightning Saix and a black Liger Zero, Takeshi’s own Zoids.
“As you no doubt are aware the team doesn’t have any team Zoids yet, as such your first test will be against my partners, the Saix is called Flash and the Liger’s name is Thunder, neither are using any aftermarket parts, and watch out for Thunder’s tail, that is in fact a beam gun on the end. Best of luck to you both, make me proud.” The team Captain once more let off the talk button and switched to an arena wide channel to speak to both those gathered and the pilots.
“This arena is now a designated Zoid battlefield, battle code: 0099, area scanned, battlefield set up..” Takeshi relished each word as they dropped from his lips, “Ready?”
“FIGHT!”
